I am hoping to do a 5k in the next few months.

I am making slow progress, starting with only running a mile or so. I am hoping to reach 2 miles of straight jogging soon.

Honestly, just make sure you aren't running back to back days as you start out your training (just like you should work same muscle groups back to back with weights). Each run will become easier and easier. When it becomes uncomfortable (not painful, but not easy) just ease up on your pace a bit. Say you run an 11 minute mile and you struggle to get to 2 miles. Make it a point to ease up on your first mile so you can keep a steady pace for a bit longer. As you continue to run and get comfortable, listen to some fast paced music that will motivate you to run at higher paces for short periods of time. Interval training has proven to be very effective in weight loss and cardiovascular training (high intensity followed by low intensity at short 30-45 second intervals).

Hope this helps with your progess.

Also, when you get to the point of running 4-5 miles and your goal is a marathon, check out different running/training schedules on websites. I have found several to be helpful.
